Cops & Kids Day Returns

Cops & Kids Day returns to the Westerville Sports C complex now that people can gather in large crowds. And a large crowd it will be. The weather forecast is clear skies and warm temperatures.

Kids will see everything connected to law enforcement, from drones and helicopters to K9 officers, equipment, services, and careers, from noon to 4 p.m. on County Line Road between Cleveland Ave. and Vesper Way.

Plenty of parking at the Sports Complex, Community Center, and adjacent office building parking lots.

Blue Ribbon Day

Westerville Police Chief Charles Chandler, other police officers, State Rep. Mary Lightbody, city council members, and city staff cut a blue ribbon marking the opening of the new $17.1-million Justice Center onHuber Village Blvd.

The Westerville Division of Police is in the process of moving investigations and 911 operations center into the building.

Westerville Police Chief Charles Chandler said the division now begins work on getting the three bureaus − the 911 center, mayor's court, and police records − moved into the new building.

A more open dedication of the building is planned for the spring of 2023 when the move is completed and the center is in full operation.

Mayor’s court records were moved Thursday with the first court date set for Sept. 21.

Questions about the mayor’s court can be found at the city's website or contact the clerk of courts at clerkofcourt@westerville.org.

Otterbein Updates

Tonight, Friday, Sept. 16, the Westerville Historical Society presents “Historic Films of Otterbein University” at 7:30 p.m. at the Westerville Library.

From the society’s event notice:

“From 1940 to 1990, Otterbein University recorded its football games on 16mm film. In the early 2000s, the Athletics Department gave these films to the University Archive. Twenty years later, a combination of technology, financial support, and scholarly insight has allowed us to begin digitizing the films.

Join us at the Westerville Public Library on Friday, September 16th at 7:30 for the program - A Moving Legacy: Historic Sports Films of Otterbein.

Otterbein Archivist Stephen D. Grinch, and Project Consultant Dr. Rusty Wilson, will tell you the history of the films, how the project came into being, and then showcase some of the unexpected treasures hidden in these dusty old reels. “

Saturday Market In Season

I see a future with fresh tomatoes and onions. And garlic, lettuce, cheese, bacon, dressing made from market spices, croutons you make from the market bakeries, a piece of baklava or pumpkin spice cookies, and coffee from a growler of dark brew.

The market opens at 9 a.m. Closes at noon.

Giant Eagle Changes

The shelves at the Giant Eagle grocery store on North State at Maxtown might look a little sparse for the next couple of weeks as the store is converted to a Giant Eagle Market District Supermarket. Market District is an upscale version of Giant Eagle that began in Pittsburgh and now has three locations in the Columbus area.

It’s not closing like the Giant Eagle in Lewis Center. Different landlord.

But, you’ll have to bring your own shopping bags or use paper bags as Giant Eagle is no longer going to use plastic bags.
