Uptown Saturday Farmers Market

The first Saturday Farmers Market opened behind city hall to warm temperatures, a large number of vendors, and a crowd eager to see the market begin another year of summer treats. My Final Photo for May 22, 2021.

First Saturday Farmers Market of the year is Saturday, May 20, 2023. The open-air market begins at 9 a.m. and ends at noon behind city hall. Check the vendor list to see if your most favored farmer, baker, gardener, woodworker, salsa maker, maple syrup, soap maker, beekeeper, pie maker, dog treats, candy maker, and pickle maker is there.

I favor the horseradish sweet pickles.

City Council Tuesday Night

Westerville’s criminal code will soon match the Ohio Revised Code when the council approves a change in wording “To Update and Amend Certain Ordinances of the Codified Ordinances to Be in Conformity with State Law and Current Construction Practices: and to Declare an Emergency.”

Included in this revision are the prohibitions against texting while driving. The link lists all the specific exceptions that will apply to you. Of course, it’s stupid to text and drive but people do it anyway. Don’t be that person.

In additional business, the council will hear a presentation on housing - Glennon Sweeney of the OSU Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity.

Native American Resistance and the War of 1812

Dr. John Bickers, an assistant professor of history at Case Western Reserve University and a citizen of the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma, presents information about the Indigenous nations' decisions leading up to the War of 1812 in a lecture at the Westerville Public Library Friday, May 19, 2023, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the main meeting rooms.

Following the Treaty of Greenville (1795), dozens of Indigenous nations across the Great Lakes region and the United States had agreed to a new peaceful alliance, which was intended to end the decades of warfare across the Ohio Country and provide space for Americans and Native peoples to live as neighbors.

Learn about the violations of this treaty and the subsequent thought process as tribal nations and individual tribal citizens had to decide how best to respond, with accommodation to maintain peace or military resistance to protect their rights.
