Hazardous Waste Weekend
And City Council Returns
If It’s Hazardous The City Will Take It
The Fall Hazardous Waste Collection is Saturday. The Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio (SWACO) partners with the city for residents to drop off almost any hazardous chemicals they have at home. The complete list is at the city’s HHWC site. Old TVs, including CRT units, computers, batteries, leftover household chemicals, and tires. They will not take your trash, asbestos, propane tanks, ammunition, or needles and medical waste. Opens at 8 a.m. Closes at 2 p.m. Arrive early to get in the long line. Arrive later for shorter lines. Unless everyone arrives later then those lines are longer. You decide.
City Council Returns
City Council returns after its summer break to consider a zoning change to allow offices at County Line and State Street, award a tree-planting bid, hear a zoning appeal for an unattached garage, and appoint a new clerk of council.
The first item scheduled on the agenda is "A Resolution of the Council of the City of Westerville Calling on the State and Federal Legislative Branches to Protect the Healthcare and Privacy Rights of Women by Enacting Legislation That Nullifies the Recent Decision of the U.S. Supreme Court in 'Dobbs V. Jackson Women's Health Organization'".
A Facebook post is calling for residents to attend the meeting to provide comments on the proposed legislation.
If you can’t attend the meeting it will be broadcast live.
Dog Days Of September
The “No Pets Allowed” rule gets thrown out the window, or into the pool, Saturday at Highlands Aquatic Center
It’s the annual Doggie Paddle where the pool is closed for the season and dogs get the final swim of the summer with small dogs (under 25 pounds) from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. and all dogs from noon to 2 p.m.
There are some rules that don’t get thrown out. Dogs are required to have proof of license and immunizations.
If You Missed It …
Westerville Police published this humorous video of Bruno and Chloe, the department’s police dogs. It speaks for itself. No explanation needed.
Pancake Breakfast
Wednesday is the monthly pancake breakfast at the Westerville Community Center. Get pancakes, eggs, sausage, orange juice, and coffee. All for $4.00. Use the Senior Center entrance at the South parking lot. From 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.
Farm To Table Dinner
Kim Sharp and Curtis Smith are hosting a Farm to Table Dinner to benefit the Saturday Farmers Market. The meal using all locally grown produce will be at their home, 847 South Hempstead Road in Westerville. It’s BYOB with donations made to “Westerville Saturday Market”. RSVP is requested. Donations may be made at Paypal or using the QR code above.
9/11 Memorial Observation
The city will begin begin the 9/11 observance with the installation of educational signage and photos in First Responder Park beginning in the afternoon Friday, Sept. 9. Visits are self-paced. The more formal ceremony will be Sunday, Sept. 11 at noon.
Uptown Saturday Night
Lightning Rod and The Thunderbolts are the featured artists on the lawn in front of city hall beginning at 7 p.m. The front lawn is within the DORA perimeter. Grab food and drinks from Uptown restaurants. Enjoy the show in the shadow of “The American Issue”, a sculpture telling the story of Westerville’s history of prohibition.
Still Time For Fresh Tomatoes
The Saturday Market behind city hall is always prepared to fill your tomato requirements. Add some Ohio-grown lettuce, some cheese, bacon, a dressing made from market spices, croutons you make from market bakers, a piece of baklava or pumplin spice cookies, and coffee from the growler of dark brew you bought. Opens at 9 a.m. Closes at noon. Oh yes, if your knife is so dull it crushes tomatoes when you try to slice it for that roast beef sandwich or hamburger, bring it to the market. There is a mobile sharpening truck.
